eBay Desktop won the Adobe MAX Rich Internet Application and People’s Choice Awards when it was released in 2007. A downloadable Flex app, it was commissioned by eBay’s Disruption Department to address what it saw as a vulnerability to its website-only experience and was my inaugural project at EffectiveUI. A good portion of the design was already in place when I joined. Over the 18 month engagement, however, I introduced new features, addressed friction points and revised user flows, and created dozens of customizable skins (with fun and slightly garish being the design directive). I’d like to believe that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery since quite a few ideas from the Desktop version were implemented on the eBay website.
